Brighton Property Direct likes it when different cultural sections of the same kind of industry interlink and with the hype of the BAFTAS coming to a close and the excitement of the Oscars getting going, we thought it was time to take a trip to Hollywood, well Hollywood in London at least. The London Film Museum is only 53 miles outside of Brighton and it showcases an enormous collection of original screen props and used costumes. In their most current exhibition we can see Ray Harryhausen ‘myths and legends,’ which has actually been extended until June, giving more visitors the chance to participate in this particular event. Ray Harryhausen is famous for his special effects from fantasy films from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. These have since have inspired many film directors and he was also the inventor of a technique called Dynamation. This allows animated models to be integrated with live action, which visitors might recognise from classic old films like Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981). Also with the increase in popularity of the comic book film, comic fantatics may want to get a look at some recent acquisitions to the museum’s collections with the Bat suit from Christian Bale’s first film as Batman in Batman Begins and Superman’s costume from the most recent Superman Returns. The London Film museum is a self governing museum which means there is an entrance fee however, this is invested back into the museum and the local community in order to help create initiatives that help form an important part of the school curriculum. So, if your a fan of the movies then this museum is definately worth a visit.

Brighton Property Direct thinks as a community we should celebrate and reward our museums, libraries and heritage institutions for all the hard work they do and things they achieve. There are many different awards celebrating a range of sections such as customer service, education, children’s facilities, given out throughout the year. There are amazing web sites such as the Brighton Hove community website which won ‘Best of the Web 2008′ in an international competition, and recently Cannon Hall Farm in Yorkshire won the White Rose award for Best Tourism Experience. Cannon Hall Farm is quite a
relatively unknown museum in Barnsley that seems to be getting more and more popular with visitors. There are many different areas for visitors to explore including the Hall itself which has a few historical rooms set up to demonstrate to visitors how the family would have lived many years ago. There are also specialised exhibitions upstairs in the galleries they show many things including a celebration of popular music through out the ages and many war objects and uniforms of different types of soldiers, RAF and navy personnel. The farm which is next to the hall is a great place for interaction and education on the animals, you can feed some of the smaller ones and they have a big breeding programme so spring is an especially good time to go and see many baby animals. Attached to this, is the farm shop which sells all home grown produce. There are beers and cheeses, meats, vegetables, chutneys and all kinds of sauces made from the Hall’s own produce which is perfect for visitors to support the local work they do and you can also buy some tasty treats for tea. On top of all this there is also one of biggest and best adventure playgrounds for kids made from natural resources which helps to encourage parents to play along and interact with the their kids. With all this amazing nature, culture and fun it is easy to see why Cannon Hall Farm is this years Best Tourism Experience

Brighton Property Direct looks at the history of classifications

Brighton Property Direct has been looking at just how important the act of classification in museums is and how throughout the years these classifications can change and the debates that can surround how objects are ordered. Looking throughout history at the classification of objects we can see how the relationship between objects and knowledge develops and how this changes depending what period in time you are looking at
. If you look at Wikipedia it tells us that Taxonomy (classification) is the practise and idea of classification or the result of it and a taxonomy is a particular classification arranged in an hierarchical structure which can then be organised by dividing up the classifications into subsections. The way objects are presented to the visitor is also another form of classification so as you can see why this is an important idea in the museum industry. A good way to look at how people’s opinions of objects from their period in history can determine what objects they would choose to display is to have a look at the Enlightenment Gallery at the British Museum. The British Museum is not far from Brighton being only half an hour train ride and the Enlightenment Gallery shows visitors the museum and its collections and then tries to demonstrate our understanding of the how the world of human achievement and the world of nature has changed over time and it is shown in museums because of this. There are seven separate sections in The Enlightenment Gallery that look at different topics that were important in certain sections of history. Firstly there was Religion and ritual, then Trade and discovery, then the birth of archaeology, Art history, Classification, the decipherment of ancient scripts and Natural history. The word ‘enlightenment’ is important because Enlightenment was the age of learning and reason that flourished across Europe and America between 1680 and 1820. This amazing exhibition holds thousands of objects to show visitors how people in Britain understood their world during this period showing how the thought process in choosing objects and classifications is essential in the museum sector and is always continually developing and changing.

Brighton Property Direct likes Downton Abbey

Brighton Property Direct is currently loving, like many people, the television series of Downton Abbey and because it is filmed in such a lovely historical house is even better. The TV series is set in Edwardian times and follows the trials and tribulations of the Crawley family and of their servants during the beginningof the 20th Century. Highclere Castle in Hampshire is used for the majority of the set for both series and the castle is one of England’s most finest examples of Victorian Castles which is set in the middle of 1,000 acres of gorgeous landscape. It is actually the Carnarvon family that have lived at Highclere since 1679 and current Earl and his wife still live there making it the biggest occupied mansion in Hampshire. Charles Barry, who helped design the houses of parliament also designed Highclere and the state rooms which visitors can actually tour are amazing. They constitute of the Saloon, Music and Drawing room, the Library and smoking room. The house is a great place to film the scenes for the television programme but there is also a huge amount of Egyptian history that is associated with family and their house. It was the 5th Earl who famously discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, the Egyptian Pharaoh, in 1922 with his archaeological partner Howard Carter. The current living family have now opened a special exhibition in the cellar of the house which celebrates all things Egyptian especially the 5th Earl’s achievements. The artefacts on display are from the Earl’s personal discoveries but also several items he purchased. After the Earl died a lot of them went to the Metropolitan Museum in New York however several artefacts were given back from the British Museum for the family to put on display. It is good for an historical house to be used for a programme like this as it helps the audience become more connected to the history.

Brighton Property Direct thinks the Brighton Centre which often plays host to a whole range of activities is a great place to visit. They have musical gigs from artists like Will Young, Jessie J and Kasabian as well as comedy shows like Bill Bailey who is on in November. The centre also plays host to special exhibitions every now and then and in February next year the Brighton model world will be there. If models are something that interests you, there are all sorts on display and you can expect to have great fun with anything miniature at this annual event. It is the exhibition’s 34th year next year and on display you can see the skills and creativity of the huge variety of model makes. There is a more current exhibition showcasing in Brighton at the moment called the ‘Radical Bloomsbury: The art of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell 1905-1925″ which is on at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. This exhibition looks at the contribution of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell to the development of 20th Century British painting. It was their Charleston style home that is often depicted in their paintings which created a style now known as the ‘Bloomsbury Style.’ The exhibition looks at how these painters researched the developments in European Art and reflected it in their own works modernising British art at the time. Even though the exhibition is free for children under 15 it does charge £6 per adult. It does end on the 9th October so if the Bloomsbury artists are favourites of yours then you better go soon.

There are also sites like facebook and twitter can help to provide access to more people who may not have visited the museum before but is also a way for the museum to provide its visitors with information about up and coming exhibitions. One of the best museums in London to use this technology to its advantage is the Tate. The Tate online provides access to its four museums; Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It has lots of different interactive sections and you can view up and coming exhibitions like “John Martin’s Apocalypse” and also current exhibitions such as “Colour and Line: Turner’s Experiments” and “Tate Movie Project Exhibition.” The site is a great way of providing people with information and it also encourages people to visit the museum itself. They have one of the largest online collections in the world as they have taken the time and effort to photograph and record each one of their pieces. The website is very easy to use. They have a search engine so the visitor can type in exactly what it is they are looking for and can specifically search for an item they want to view. They also have sections that include education on the Tate itself and the pieces they hold. Their conservation team also have their own area and have specific sections to discuss technical examination and analysis on certain paintings. The website on the whole is fantastic but nothing beats seeing these objects live in the flesh at the actual museums.

Brighton Property Direct is always aware that Brighton property for sale must offer sufficient toilets facilities for any purchaser to ensure the happy future occupancy of a new home. A family with small children, or even more a family wiht teenagers means one bathroom just wont cut the mustard these days – hence the ever increasing popularity of en-suite bathrooms off the master bedroom.

If youve just paid £350,000 for a new house the least you expect is easy access to the toilet. So on June the 7th, at The Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel there’ s a public auction and one of the Brighton properties for sale is a public lavatory with a great location.

But certainly the essentials are all there along with great locations and so with the right planning permission these properties for sale in Brighton could be a great investment.

IF they get the planning permission – if not it could just prove to be a very expensive way to spend 2 million pennies!

Brighton Benefits From The Staycation

Brighton property management was given another push int he direction of short term lets this week with the report featured on the Brighton Business web site forum showing evidence that more and more people are staying in the UK for their holidays.

Last year the number of visitors to one of Brighton’s greatest assets, the Royal Pavilion, were up by over 30,000 compared to the previous year.

Hove’s Museum and Art Gallery similarly saw a rise of around 10% with attendance figures going up from 39.000 last year to 43,000 this year. Because of discount schemes and the new group booking system the council is able to identify the nationality of a great many of the visitors – for instance local Council Tax payers can get discounted entry – and based on this data they can see that the great growth in terms of visitor numbers is largely UK residents, with visitors from the USA and Germany coming a close second.

This is all great news for the city as greater visitor numbers feeds through into finance for the cities businesses and work force – helping to safeguard jobs and services. We’ve discussed in the past the sad closure of one or two of the city councils facilities, but these kind of numbers mean more money going into the coffers which means one of our most treasured resources – primarily the heritage and history of Brighton and Hove remains protected in the safest form of security – economic viability.

As a result the emergence and growth of Brighton Property management continues to gain ground with many property owners looking more and more to rent out their properties professionally. Brighton and Hove remains one of the best prospects for property investment despite the recession and this news can only help strengthen our position as one of the economically strongest cities in the UK.

Brightons Fringe Goes Untrimmed

This is their 5th year and its looks to be an enspecially enjoyable one – with such personal highlights as ‘Lucy Bundy is Fake Bush’ appearing on the 15th of May at The Brunswick. Ive seen Lucy Bundy perform on a number of evenings and she completely captivates you. Her act is a tribute to one of the greats – Kate Bush – but Lucy brings a level of humour and fun to the evening which always wins the audience. She’s also an very talented singer in her own right too so be prepared to be impressed on every front!

There’s also a wealth of fantastic Early Music and Classical Music performances, and with many of those being broadcast by the BBC they offer an opportunity to see absolute world class performances and real knock-down prices. I shall be writing more about those performances next week, bu again, check the Festival website soon because tickets wont hang around for long!

Brightons Popularity Is Good For Us All

Brighton Property Direct may only be in it’s third year of property search and management, but we’ve been amazed at the increasing popularity of Brighton as a destination for both visitors and new residents looking to build a new life here.

The last two years of Brighton Pride have demonstrated that Brighton figures highly on the nations register of great places to visit for special events, with the May Arts Festival being another major showcase for the city .

But that mood seems to be pretty much the case for the whole summer this year with record numbers being predicted for this years summer. This is all great news for everyone in Brighton – visitors and residents alike. I know its a popular complaint – groups of twenty visiting language students blocking the pavement so people cant get onto buses , people have to push their buggies out into the road to get past etc. – and those things are true – but we forget that those self same young visitors bring long term prosperity into the city in these depressing times. They take up accommodation, they spend money in the cafes and food stores, provide an income to the schools and jobs for the language teachers. Although I havent seen any statistics, I also stongly suspect that they will then return later in life for another trip to revisit one of the locations of one of their earliest adventures in travel and being independent without their parents.

This benefit is duplicated in all the visiting Academics and Healthcare Specialists that we book in for longer term accomodation over the year. They bring their money which filters into all the bars and restaurants of the city – but they also bring their kudos – with the reputations of our Universities and Colleges benefiting and thereby attracting investment and development.

The visiting tourists are, of course, one of the main arteries to Brighton and Hove’s financial well-being. Another indirect benefit of all of these visitors is the fact the council are so committed to keeping the place clean and attractive, keeping people safe on the streets, and providing as best a public transport infrastructure as they can – and this is something we all benefit from and shouldn’t lose sight of. With massive cuts across policing, civic services and public transport widespread amongst so many other cities of comparable size to Brighton , there is a real possibility that our City can be sheltered from much of the terrible reduction in services. So next time you walk past a visiting student or someone puzzling over a map trying to find the way to the Dome – give em a smile and ask them if they need any help – because they are helping us keep our city such a great place to live!
